> Finally, Fusion Power Is About to Become a Reality
> Long considered a joke, or a pipe dream, fusion is suddenly making enormous leaps

Kevin Roose in the NYTimes about "The Hidden Automation Agenda of the Davos Elite". Interesting (yet unsurprising) read.

Key takeaway:

> Kai-Fu Lee, the author of “AI Superpowers” and a longtime technology executive, predicts that artificial intelligence will eliminate 40 percent of the world’s jobs within 15 years.

WhatsApp is next - and it's been coming for a while Show more

Conclusion: Signal it is. Not willing to replace Black Plague (WhatsApp) with cholera (Hangouts), my team opted for Signal, willingly accepting the higher cost of switching.* Quality people, all of 'em.

*) We all have Google accounts already so the switch to Hangouts would've been much easier.

I was going to announce it a bit later and more properly, but Mastodon received a $70k grant from Samsung NEXT through OpenCollective. I intend to make it available to those who contribute to the project, and have already notified some of the most regular contributors. The way OpenCollective works is that anyone can submit an expense and all transactions are listed transparently. It also holds the money.

As for myself, I intend to continue using Patreon for my own wage/costs.

Danke, @datenteiler

Looking for a new personal groupchat app for my coworkers and myself. WhatsApp is out for GDPR reasons (i.e., automatic contact sync w/ server which may leak customer data from work phone to server).

I'll be honest, this is more about GDPR compliance than our chat privacy. So I'm looking at both Signal and Telegram.

Any other suggestions?

@humanetech @rysiek @switchingsocial We cannot blame people for using the tools of surveillance capitalism as long as 99.99999% of all investment goes into surveillance capitalism. That’s victim blaming. It’s the same as telling people that they can solve climate change by altering their consumption habits while just 100 companies are responsible for 71% of all carbon emissions. We need systemic regulation of abusers and investment in alternatives.

Author Robin Sloan:

> Email is definitely not ideal, but it is: decentralized, reliable, and not going anywhere—and more and more, those feel like quasi-magical properties.

i've never googled "sapiosexuals" so i just assume they love fucking maple trees, and im cool with it

Mastodon is going through an identity crisis. I spoke with @Gargron about Mastodon and its future.

The Incredible Sounds of the Falcon Heavy Launch (BINAURAL AUDIO IMMERSION) - Smarter Every Day 189

That was pretty cool!

Inspired by this, I just shifted my static homepage to beaker,
serving on both dat and https using homebase.

It was stupidly easy, even integrating it into my existing nginx setup.
Now I have editing and version control built in, no need for separate git repo. Edit and press the publish button in Beaker, job done.

Testing out dat:// and the Beaker browser. I was suprised how easy it is to publish an existing static website to dat. Here's my blog, for example: dat://a3014080859dbb7130fa30b4f676b5360153d565e0d052d1c4556d7e6f614a31/

Are there any serious contenders to Google Photos? I'm talking handling of lots of photos, face recognition, reliable mobile and desktop clients, storage space. Need support for macOS, Android, iOS.

Honest question.
